Best Practice Awards Selection Committee Call For Membership

Best Practice Award Selection Committees

The best practice award selection committees will review applications for best practice award winners.   Any student, staff, or faculty member from a college or university in California with experience or knowledge of the below topics can participate on an award selection committee. We also welcome representatives of the UC/CSU/Utility Partnership Program and the CCC/Utility Partnership Program to participate.  If your campus is planning to apply for an award, you can still participate.  What will happen in cases like this is that if for example Jane Doe from UCSB wants to participate on the transportation committee, but someone from UCSB applies for an award in that category.  Jane will still be able to grade proposals from CSU, private college, and CCC campuses but will not grade the UC proposals in that category due to the conflict of interest.

We are currently looking for committee members for the following award selection committees:

* We advise only signing up for one best practice selection committee as all of the committees will meet during the same week and the turn around time for the committees is fairly short.

  • Food Service
  • Student Leadership
  • Academics (covers three award categories)
  • Transportation
  • Waste Reduction
  • Water Efficiency/Site Water Quality
  • Partnerships (covers two award categories)
  • Communications
  • Planning
  • Social Equity
  • Energy Efficiency (covers two award categories)
  • Renewables
  • Overall Sustainable Design
  • Innovations

Responsibilities:

  • Review and grade best practice award self-nomination forms;
  • Select a winner for each higher education system (4 winners per award category);
  • Determine if there are any projects that should be considered for honorable mention; and
  • Document some key reasons why the winners stood out from other applicants.

* Most committees will receive 10-25 applications to review.  Committees who oversee multiple categories (Academics, Energy Efficiency, and Partnerships) will receive more.  Overall Sustainable Design Proposals also tend to be a little longer and require more review time. If a committee receives more than 40 proposals, we will likely divide the work among committee members to reduce the work load per committee member.

Application Process:

To apply, please review the information below and then fill out this form by February 16th, 2018.

We tried to keep the questions few and brief. For this reason, we encourage applicants to be brief in their responses. In addition to some basic demographic information, applicants will be asked the following:

  1. Would you prefer a one or two year term? At this point in time, people can reapply after their term expires.
  2. In what ways have you engaged with CHESC previously (attendance, committee membership, speaking, hosting, etc.)?
  3. What is your experience/knowledge of the topic area you choose? (200 words or less)
  4. Would you also like to be considered for Chair of the committee you are applying for?
    1. If you indicate in interest in being Chair, you will be asked: “Please note any additional experiences or knowledge that you have that has prepared you for being a good chair.” (200 words or less)

Please note that you will not be able to save partial applications and so it is better to write out your answers in advance or do it in one sitting.
