The 2019 Call for Speaking and Best Practice Award Proposals

We have streamlined the application process this year and have combined the Speaking Proposal, Poster Proposal, and the Best Practice Award Application into one form.

We seek speakers who have crossed silos within their institutions to create sustainable change, infused concepts of sustainability into curriculum, and/or pursued research questions related to sustainability (especially where the research has or could be applied to campus sustainability). We are especially excited about speakers that have created a connection across academic and operational departments. Please see below for:

To Apply

You may apply directly through Proposal Space (our proposal management software) or you may download our application form to develop your answers. If you are working in proposal space, you can save periodically to ensure your answers are kept if you cannot complete the application in one sitting. If you are concerned about technical difficulties or to be extra careful, you can always use the downloaded application form to draft answers and then copy and paste those into proposal space. Once you have drafted your answers, please go to our online form to enter your data. Please note that due to word limits, if you try and enter in more words than is possible, the software will not allow for words beyond the limit to be included. For example if the word limit is 150 and you copy and paste in 155 words, the last 5 words may not appear. Please be attentive to this when you are entering in your data. We ask that anyone who is able to, submit their proposal through Proposal Space. Please do not email us a copy of your application unless you are having technical difficulties or have special needs. In those cases, we will be happy to accept your application via email sent to julia.chesc@gmail.com.

If you are working with multiple speakers, we also created a document of only the speaker specific questions (biographies, etc) so that you can easily collect information from your co-speakers. The speaker specific questions are here.

Please note that CHESC staff do not make decisions on proposals, we can give advice on crafting your proposals, but ultimately the speaker selection committees will choose the speakers and we cannot predict what proposals will or will not be accepted until all proposals are submitted and reviewed.

Eligibility

Details on eligibility for award applicants can be found on the overview page for the best practice awards. For speaking presentations and the poster show, please see the details below.

All presenters must be directly involved in the project/research being discussed. It is not appropriate for someone from the same program, campus, or department who did not directly work on the project/research to present. All presenters must discuss their work on the project. Our audience is known for asking very detailed questions and the presenter must have an intimate knowledge of the project.

Staff, faculty/researchers, and students of colleges and universities are invited to submit proposals. You do not need to be from a California campus to propose a talk, you may be from out-of-state.

Representatives of private companies may only present if they are co-speaking with a campus. The campus presenter must talk about their work on the project and may not act simply as an endorsement for the company presenter. If submitted for an award, please note that award applications can only go to colleges and universities from the University of California, California State University, California Community Colleges, or a private college in California.

Government (non-campus) should generally speak with a campus co-presenter though may speak without a campus co-presenter if they are discussing legislation or codes that affect campuses; or resources directed towards campuses such as grants or technical assistance programs. Government representatives must co-speak with a campus on all other presentations.

The campus co-presenter must be listed on the application at the time of submission or the application will not be reviewed by the speaker selection committee. CHESC staff will flag the application as not meeting the eligibility requirements before it goes to committee.

Examples could include design charrettes or world cafes. Panel discussions do not count as interactive sessions.

Performance Art

45min or 75min. for performance.

This will fill a whole session.

This format is reserved for performance work. Artistic, Dance, or Theater Based Performance could be included.

We are seeking posters that are 4 ft tall by 3ft wide or smaller.

Review Process

The review process is similar for all applications however, details on the process for award applicants can be found on the overview page for the best practice awards. For speaking presentations and the poster show, please see the details below.

All proposals will be reviewed by committees of staff, faculty and students from colleges and universities in California. Each topic area is represented by a speaker selection committee. Proposals will be graded according to the proposal evaluation criteria and speaker selection guidelines. Please note that any representatives from private companies must have a campus co-speaker listed on the proposal by name in order for their proposal to be considered.

Student Convergence

The convergence is a post-conference, half-day workshop. It will highlight new student campaigns, upcoming projects, and skill sharing workshops. Students will also have a chance to network with other student leaders from California Community Colleges, California State University, University of California, and Private campuses throughout the state collectively as well as with students from their own systems. Students can attend the convergence without attending the main conference. To apply to present at the convergence, please follow the same instructions as the general call for proposals.
